Instant dimming upon the arrival of vehicles or pedestrians
In addition to programmed dimming at night in accordance with the day of the week, the lighting can also be dimmed depending on whether a vehicle or pedestrian is detected. Lighting Plan 4.0 puts in place this type of dimming on slip roads, at rest areas and at pedestrian crossings at those times when the lights are no longer operating at maximum brightness.
If there are no vehicles on the slip road, the programmed dimming mode is activated. Consequently, if a vehicle is detected, the light intensity will automatically and instantly increase by 20% for a set period of time. This temporary increase in light intensity improves visibility for those users who are joining the motorway. It also attracts the attention of users who are already on the motorway to the fact they need to prepare for a vehicle joining their lane.
If a pedestrian is detected at a crossing, the light intensity is changed to maximum output to ensure that pedestrians – who are more vulnerable road users – remain as visible as possible to other users of the road.
In order to save energy, the light intensity in any rest areas will only be varied when a vehicle and/or pedestrian is detected.
